Visit the "City of Enamels

The town of Briare bears witness to its rich past.
its Celtic origins date back to the 4th century, and from that time the town was an important trading centre, thanks to its location on the banks of the Loire. The construction of the canals in 1604 helped to intensify trade with the whole of France. For the town we are looking at today, it all began in 1851 with the arrival of Jean-Félix Bapterosses, the founder of Briare enamels. Since then, the town has been renowned for its enamels and mosaics, which are known and used throughout the world, as well as for its Pont-Canal, which for a long time was the longest in Europe. The church of St Etienne, built in 1895, is adorned with a mosaic decoration entirely the work of Eugène Grasset, which has just been restored.
